Steelers Fans Frustrated as Team Stuck in Neutral

The Pittsburgh Steelers are at a bit of a crossroads. After another disappointing playoff exit in 2024, fans are getting restless. Despite some big moves, like firing Offensive Coordinator Matt Canada and bringing in Arthur Smith, the team’s results didn’t change. They finished 10-7, just like in 2023, and lost in the Wild Card Round—again.

The Steelers have invested heavily in their offensive line, signed veteran QBs, and bolstered their defense, but it hasn’t been enough. And now, the fan base is pointing fingers, with many calling for Head Coach Mike Tomlin to be fired.

Tomlin Under Fire

Tomlin has long been praised for his streak of non-losing seasons, but that doesn’t seem to carry the same weight anymore. Some fans even think he should step down voluntarily. Despite the noise, insiders don’t expect big changes.

Steelers beat reporter Ray Fittipaldo recently told The PM Team with Poni and Mueller on 93.7 The Fan that he doesn’t see the team making the moves fans want. He doesn’t expect Tomlin to leave and believes coordinators Arthur Smith and Teryl Austin will stay as well. Even position coaches like Offensive Line Coach Pat Meyer, often criticized by fans, are likely safe since they’re under contract for next year.

“I haven’t heard that they would be willing to get rid of somebody who’s under contract next year,” Fittipaldo said. “Things could change, but I don’t get the sense they’re going to make a move there.”

Offensive Line Struggles

Meyer, who’s been with the Steelers since 2022, has received mixed reviews. Early in the season, he was praised for improving the line, especially after the team invested heavily in the group with first- and second-round draft picks and solid veteran signings. But the progress hasn’t been what fans expected, especially with first-rounder Broderick Jones seeming to regress in 2024.

To be fair, injuries hit the offensive line hard. First-round tackle Troy Fautanu was out early, center Nate Herbig missed significant time, and James Daniels—one of their most reliable linemen—tore his Achilles in Week 4. Backup players like Zach Frazier and Mason McCormick stepped up, but the constant shuffling made it tough for the line to find any rhythm.

Fan Frustration at an All-Time High

Fittipaldo said the fan base is angrier than he’s ever seen since he started covering the team in 2012. He compared it to the fallout from the crushing 2017 playoff loss to the Jaguars and the 0-4 start in 2013, though back then, the Steelers turned it around the next season. This time, the mood feels worse.

The last time the Steelers won a playoff game was in the 2016 season when they beat the Kansas City Chiefs (pre-Mahomes era). Since then, they’ve made the playoffs five times but lost every single time.

Now, fans are not only upset with Tomlin but are starting to vent their frustrations at the team’s ownership for their lack of action.

With the pressure mounting, it’s clear that Steelers Nation won’t be happy with more of the same in 2025. Something’s got to give—eventually.
